If you choose to have PPI or X-Charge deposit monies to the Operating Account, you need to process the credit card payment through Payments Received selecting the “Charge Credit Card for this Payment” button. This is all that needs to be done as PPI will deposit money to the Operating Account in the bank and the system will now reflect that deposit in that account.
If you choose to have PPI deposit the monies to the Trust Account you must complete two extra steps to properly record the money in the Trust Account in the system. In the system you will have to:
- Process payment through Payments Received being sure that the Charge Credit Card for This Payment button is selected. The system will now show a deposit in the Operating Account.
- Go back to Payments Received and enter a Negative Payment, making sure the Charge Credit Card for this Payment button is NOT checked. (We don't want to give the credit card company the money back!). This will make the adjustments to the Operating Account in the system to offset the deposit from step #1.
- Finally, go to Trust > Trust Deposit, noting in the description that this was a credit card payment from PPI.
Generally, State Bar Associations do not recommend accepting credit card transactions for Trust, as disputes can result in money being withdrawn beyond what the client’s individual balance might allow.
