Error description: Error ADSADT/6610 The Advantage Database Server did not respond to a database request in a timely manner. A communications problem has occurred. Search for 6610 in the Advantage Knowledge Base for possible solutions.
This error typically is returned by the Advantage Database Server used by AbacusLaw by CARET to control the connections to the underlying database after it was unable to communicate with your workstation. The connection the workstation had with the server timed out as a result.
The three situations where this will commonly occur:
- During slow network performance, or a network outage that caused the workstation to be unable to communicate with the server. If the error is a frequent occurrence, talk to your IT or system administrator to have your network performance tested and troubleshooted, as there may be an ongoing issue with your network configuration that needs to be resolved.
- Your PC went to sleep. When it goes to sleep, AbacusLaw by CARET may still be running, but your workstation is not continuing to send packets to Advantage on the server, causing the connection to timeout. By the time you wake your PC up, AbacusLaw by CARET has lost the connection and crashed. To avoid this issue, do one of the following:
- Do not put your PC to sleep and ensure that is not set to sleep automatically after a period of inactivity. Instead, lock your PC.
- Close AbacusLaw by CARET before sleeping your PC.
- Antivirus or antimalware software is severing communication during a routine scan, or because it flags lawwin.exe (the executable used by AbacusLaw by CARET) as suspicious. Ensure that any antivirus software running on the workstation (and server) has exceptions programmed in for lawwin.exe, AbacusA.exe, and Msgs.exe. These are located in the \Abacus\v23\Programs folder on the server.
Increasing the Timeout
You may also find that you experience fewer issues if you increase the timeout interval that Advantage is configured for, so that it will wait longer before timing out the workstation's connection when it does not receive a response.
Increasing the timeout also can cause Advantage to hold onto connections from the workstation that have ended for longer, making other errors (such as an error 7003, indicating that the maximum number of users is connected) more common.
Follow these steps to increase the timeout period.
- Log into the desktop on the server where AbacusLaw by CARET is installed locally.
- Open the Advantage Configuration Utility. You can find it by searching for it in the Start menu's search bar.
- Navigate to the Configuration Utility tab.
- View the Communications tab underneath the Configuration Utility tab.
- Change Client Time Out (seconds) as desired. 120 seconds is the default.
- In some cases, changing Compression from Internet to Always will also diminish performance and connection issues.
