The steps below are for implementing user licenses that have been added to your subscription, but not yet implemented in your AbacusLaw installation. To add new user licenses to your subscription, please contact Sales at 800-726-3339. Note that addendums can take up to three business days for order processing before they can be added to your AbacusLaw installation.

Configuring AbacusLaw
- Have all users log out of all Abacus programs, including AbacusLaw, Abacus Accounting, and Abacus MessageSlips.
- Log onto your server.
- To ensure that all connections to the database are closed, open the Advantage Configuration Utility and click Stop Service.
- Open AbacusLaw on your server.
- Navigate to File > Register. Click Activate.
If the Register option is grayed out, ensure that you are logged in as a user with the Administrator security profile set. - Following this, AbacusLaw will attempt to configure Advantage (the database service that Abacus connects to) to add the users. It is only able to do this automatically if activation is run from the server, all users are logged out of all Abacus programs, and Abacus is run as administrator. If it is successful, you should see a prompt that indicates: Fortress License successfully updated. If not, you should see a prompt with instructions on how to perform the update yourself. Note down the Serial Number and Validation Code listed here, for reference below.
- A window should appear that indicates: “License successfully activated.” On that window should be a line that indicates: “Registered up to X” (X being the number of users that are included in your registration). Verify that the number is correct. If not, your addendum may not have been processed yet. You can contact Sales at 800-726-3339 to inquire about the status.
Configuring Advantage (aka Fortress)
These steps can be skipped if Abacus reported “Fortress License successfully updated” in the steps above, or if you are running AbacusLaw in Abacus Private Cloud.
- Navigate to the Advantage directory on the server. Typically, this is C:\Program Files\Advantage [version]\server.
- Run adsstamp.exe.
- On the window that appears, click License.
- Enter the Serial Number and Validation Code that you noted down before. Replication Code should be left blank.
If you continue, the Advantage Database Server will be restarted, which will cause any open Abacus programs to crash! Please ensure that all users are in-fact not using any Abacus programs before continuing. - Click Next.
- Ensure that the Registered Owner (typically the firm name) is entered, and that Automatic Startup is selected. Click Next.
- Click Exit.
Adding the New User(s)

Installing AbacusLaw on the New Workstations
This step can be skipped if you are running AbacusLaw in Abacus Private Cloud, or on a terminal server.
