TAPI Support and Fonality Phone System

If you use the Fonality phone system, you can have buttons in the AbacusLaw by CARET Names screen that dial the phone for you.

This process has been greatly simplified since AbacusLaw by CARET version 23.11. If your version of Abacus is older than 23.11, you will need to either update Abacus or follow the Old Way below.

This will not work at all with the Web version of Fonality. You must use the local installation.

To enable Fonality support, when installing the HUD, you must select to install the TAPI driver. If it was not installed, you can go to Options > Installed Components (within Fonality) to install it.

New Way

1. On a computer with Fonality installed and configured, close any Names windows you have open in AbacusLaw by CARET.
2. In AbacusLaw by CARET, go to File > Setup > System Options.
3. In the Features tab, click the drop-down for TAPI Dialer and select Fonality.
   
   
   
   
4. Click Done.
5. That's it. From now on, within any Names screen, you should see a little phone icon next to each number field.
   
   
   
   
6. Click that icon to dial the number.
7. If you get a message saying you need to set your local phone/modem preferences, follow step 3 in the Old Way below.
8. If you want the Names record to open when someone in your Names database calls and it does not, see the Screen pops section at the bottom of this article.

Old Way

1. Open Microsoft Notepad and edit lawwin.ini file located at
   • C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\VirutalStore\Windows\lawwin.ini
     
     
     
     
2. Go to the very bottom and add:
   • [TAPI]
   • UseTapiDialer=F:\Abacus\v23\Data01
     
     
     
     
3. Replace the F: file path with the correct path from your network.
4. In Windows Control Panel go to Phones and Modem and enter a local area code. You can navigate there by clicking the Start menu in Windows, click Control Panel, open Phone and Modem, enter your area code, also enter the number to dial out IF you use one.
   
   
   
   
5. Customize your name screen. If using the standard Original screen go to File > Setup > User Defined Screens, Name and clone the ORIGINAL screen. Enter an ID of CUSTOM in the upper left.)
   
   
   
   
6. Edit the field properties for the phone number field you wish to be able to dial by right-clicking it and then change the Listbox to Use Field to:
   • DIALNUMBER( "1"+ STRIPIT(OGET:VARGET(), .F., .T.))
     
     

Screen pops

This is the popular nickname for popping up a Names window automatically when your phone rings and CallerID has a phone number that belongs to one of your Name records. AbacusLaw by CARET does need to be open for this to work. 

1. After doing all the other Setup above, go to your Fonality HUD program and select File > Settings > Web Launcher. In the Inbound Calls field enter:
