This guide covers a standard conversion where no components in your existing HotDocs 11 template have been deprecated in later version of HotDocs Author.

Please note that HotDocs Author only supports the following template formats:
- .ttx (Plain Text Template)
- .DOCX (Microsoft Word Template)
- .HDINT (Answer intake file format introduced in HotDocs Author)
WordPerfect, .RTF, .DOC or .DOT templates require conversion to an Author-compatible format before they can be imported

Be advised that all other HotDocs 11 template formats are not compatible with HotDocs Author, including .HPT, .HFT and .HDL
Convert WordPerfect template to .DOCX (full guide)
You will need to have WordPerfect X7 or earlier version installed on your machine in order to be able to convert your .wpt template(s)* as well as HotDocs Developer 11
- Note that the latest version of WordPerfect supported by HotDocs 11.2 is X7. At the moment there are no plans to make any later versions compatible with HotDocs Developer.
- Firstly, make a backup of all the templates you are planning to convert.
- Then select the whole library or a specific template(s) that you would like to convert and click on ‘Template Manager’
3. After that choose template(s) that require conversion and use ‘Convert’ tool
4. Template Manager converts the templates (and clauses, if any) to the new format.
a. As it does this, it opens each template file in Word and makes the necessary updates. Depending on hardware performance and template complexity, this step may take a very short amount of time and may not be visible while it is in action. Please do not be worried if you did not see this stage.
5. When the conversion is complete, you are returned to the Template Manager window.
a. Once it finishes converting the templates, it refreshes the Template Manager database:
Preparing your Developer templates for import (full guide)
There are certain technical limitations that you should be aware of before attempting to import your existing Developer template to HotDocs Author.
Some of the most important factors are detailed below.
Artifacts that will fail a template import:
- Clause Components, Clause Archives, and Clause Libraries
Templates that contain clause components, clause archives, and clause libraries are not currently supported for import.
You will need to remove the clause component from the template before import.
Before deleting any clauses, you should first consider preserving the clause text itself by opening the Clause Editor and clicking the Edit Clause Text button.
To delete clauses:
- Launch HotDocs Developer 11
- Go to Component Manager
- In the components drop-down list choose Clauses
2. Database Components
Database components as they exist in HotDocs Developer 11 require both template authors and template users to have access (and permissions) to the database, which presents a technical challenge for any cloud-based platform such as HotDocs Advance.
You will need to remove any database components from the template before import.
To do so, follow the steps above but pick 'Databases' in the component list

HotDocs Author does not support importing published templates that contain the settings component file lock, registration, expiration date, and password protection.
Locate the original, unpublished version of the template and attempt your import again. If you do not have access to the unpublished version of the template, you cannot import this template.
- Lengthy template names
Windows imposed a maximum filename length such that a filename, including the file path to get to the file, cannot exceed 259 characters. This 259-character limit is most commonly exceeded due to a deeply nested workspace folder location.
Ensure your template name and workspace file path does not exceed the Windows' 259-character limit in one or more of the following ways:
- Using File Explorer, shorten the name of the Author workspace (or any other folder names in the file path) before attempting to import.
- Use Template Manager in HotDocs Developer 11 to shorten the template file name before attempting to import.
- Using File Explorer, move the location where the workspace is stored on your hard drive to a location with a shorter file path (with fewer nested folders). For example, you could move the workspace from a customized deeply nested location back to the default location C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\HotDocs Author\<Workspace Name>or from the default workspace location to C:\<Workspace Name>.
!!! If the template you rename is inserted or assembled in other templates, you will also need to update the template name in those templates!!!

Import Developer template to Author
- In HotDocs Author click on ‘Import’ in the top tool bar and then select ‘HotDocs 11.x’
2. Locate your template and initiate the conversion by clicking on ‘Browse’ and then selecting your HD11 template(s).
3. At the end of conversion process, you will be displayed a list of results.
If there are any warnings displayed within the results this may indicate that some of your components are either no longer supported or require an alternative / manual implementation.
