After you have successfully set up and synced, you will need to know how to create an event from your phone. There are two ways for adding an event using your phone's local calendar: a basic entry and a detailed entry. Adding a basic entry is as easy as completing Step 1 below and making sure you are selecting the correct calendar.
The detailed entry will take a little more time, but can save you time later in AbacusLaw by CARET. Please follow the steps below to learn how to link events to matters and names.
- On the phone create a calendar event and make sure the correct calendar is selected. If done, you can sync your phone now. To add more details continues to step 2.
In the “Title” field (or “what” field) you can add details by using the following syntax:
- .WHO: (WHAT) Last, First (Matter) Text
A period at the beginning of the event title to bill the event
The AbacusLaw by CARET User
Event type, i.e. (APPT) for an Appointment, ex. (MEET) for a Meeting
The contact name for the event to link to
Matter to link, the event to. (Also used for billing)
To be displayed in the event's note section in AbacusLaw by CARET
- Sync the device for the event to appear in AbacusLaw by CARET.
If you are billing a client for a timed event, please make sure to add the start/end time. AbacusLaw by CARET will calculate the total time spent on the event so that it can be billed correctly in AbacusLaw by CARET.

When you have successfully completed sync, the event will appear in AbacusLaw by CARET. If the name or matter fields are not inputted correctly, or if there are multiple names or matters with the same name, the fields WILL still sync over. You will be prompted when editing the event to choose the correct name and matter.
With a billed event the last step in the billing process using your mobile device is to go back into AbacusLaw by CARET and bring up that matter, select the billed event, and link the event to Abacus Accounting using the “Bill” button at the bottom of the matter as shown below.
If you have multiple pending bills, you can bill them together by going to Tools > Accounting Setup > Bill Pending Items
