NOTE: This article is for the ADS version of AbacusLaw by CARET.
This article was created to assist clients in migrating AbacusLaw by CARET from one server to another.
There are two options when migrating/upgrading to a new server. You can have our Professional Services (PS) department perform the migration for you for a fee; or you can do it yourself using this Knowledge Base article. Client Services does not perform server migrations.
Please note that if you choose to migrate yourself and run into issues, the Professional Services department will have to get involved for a fee.
On the Old Server
- Ensure the current server is running the latest version by downloading the current ADS version of AbacusLaw by CARET.
- If you're running the updates, note that two prompts will appear. Select No to both of these unless otherwise specified.
- Follow this guide to update the current server's version of AbacusLaw by CARET.
- Make a backup. Follow the backup instructions in this guide.
- Open AbacusLaw by CARET on the server and go to File > Register > Transfer to release the license.
- Go to Administrative Tools > Services and verify that the Abacus Update Service and the Advantage Database Server have been stopped and are disabled.
- Uninstall the Advantage Database Server by navigating to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Copy the entire Abacus folder and take the old server offline. If you have any 3rd party backup software, it would be a good time to make a complete backup of the folder as well.
On the New Server
- Log in as an Administrator.
- Ensure User Account Control is disabled.
- Disable any antivirus or firewalls that may impede the installation of the program.
- Copy the entire Abacus folder to the new server.
- Share the Abacus folder that you copied to the new server with full permissions for all users.
- Download your ADS version of AbacusLaw by CARET.
- Run the installer. Be sure to enter your Customer ID and Firm Name prior to executing it.
- While they are optional fields, if you do not enter the Customer ID and Firm Name before executing the installer, the Advantage Database Server will NOT install, and not all AbacusLaw by CARET options that the user purchased on their subscription may be installed.
- If the installer was not able to contact the AbacusLaw servers for any reason, please be sure to select the components that the client uses manually when running the installer.
- When prompted with Select Destination Directory, you will need to point the installer to your current Abacus Directory (ex: C:\Abacus), otherwise it will not use your existing database.
- After the Abacus program is installed on the new server open the AbacusLaw by CARET program.
- Click File > Register. Enter your Customer ID that was provided to you and your Firm name into the registration screen. Click the Activate button.
- If you installed the Advantage Database Server (Fortress), find the ads.ini file located in Abacus\v##\Programs (where ## = current version) and update the new server name and new server IP address if necessary. Open the ads.ini file in Notepad and make edits. Save and replace the file.
- {Enter Server's computer name in the brackets}
- lan_ip={input new server IP address here}
- lan_port=6262
- Set the following firewall port exceptions if running the default Windows Firewall or any third-party firewalls:
- 6262 UDP (Advantage Database Server)
- 8006 and 8007 TCP (Abacus Update Service)
On Each Workstation
- Map the workstations to the new server. The mapped drive and path to the Abacus folder should be the same as the old server. If so, the program is ready to run. Otherwise, continue if the path has changed.
- If the drive letter or path was changed, you will need to map a new network drive (to the new server name, NOT the new server's IP address) to that drive letter.
- Navigate to the server Abacus\v##\Programs and run AbacusLaw WorkStation Standard Setup [Version numbers].msi. (## represents the number of the version, e.g., v23.)
- On versions 23.25 and older, “station.exe” is ran instead of AbacusLaw WorkStation Standard Setup [Version numbers].msi
The server migration should be complete. Check each workstation. Verify that all users can access the database and that all document links are still accessible.
